An exquisite stone sculpture of the Buddha with Mucalinda, the Nāga king of serpents.

The sculpture depicts the Buddha seated in a meditative posture, with his hands in the dhyana mudra. The Nāga king, Mucalinda, is coiled around the Buddha, with its hood protecting him from the elements. This remarkable statue base is a serpent's body, with scales.

Depiction is based on the legend that after the Buddha's enlightenment, a fierce storm arose, and Mucalinda emerged from his abode to protect the Buddha from the elements.

This antique sculpture is a rare and precious addition to any collection.

The motif of the meditating Buddha protected by the coils of the naga king Mucalinda was a favourite of Khmer sculptors and also became popular in Thailand.

Antique stone statues #Gandharan #Buddha

Gandharan art, which flourished from the 1st to 5th centuries AD, reflects this cultural diversity, with elements of Greek, Roman, Persian, and Indian art blending together to create a distinct and innovative style. The iconic Gandharan Buddha sculptures, for example, feature Hellenistic-inspired drapery and realistic facial features, combined with Indian iconography and symbolism. The result is a rich and fascinating artistic tradition that captures the essence of the region's multicultural heritage.
